For improving the possibilities of getting your improvements into Geoserver core you could make a JIRA issue into https://osgeo-org.atlassian.net/projects/GEOS and refer to a pull request in GitHub. I hope that the developers will tell you what parts of this document http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/developer/ are relevant for you. Test case at least is probably needed.
