Thanks for your response. I've started thinking the same... I've been doing so 
many tests that I can assure that I've tested that. I'll review it again. It 
has to be something related to grants.

is it possible that the GeoServer user has no access to the network drive?

I personally had often the problem that I tested the access to some ressources 
with another user (mostly root).
