Izabella,

multiple GeoServer instances can coexist in a single Tomcat instance. 
This is a standard deployment pattern for Java servlets and as far as I 
know often used for GeoServer. All servlets use the port configured for 
Tomcat but each has a different context paths in its URL: for example 
localhost:8080/geoserver270 and localhost:8080/geoserver280 and so on.

Under the hood, each servlet gets its own class loader so there is no 
conflict between classes from different servlets. It is possible for 
servlets to interfere with each other if they do bad things like 
changing JVM system properties; such problems are bugs and should be 
fixed. All servlets see the same environment variables so options 
configured for one GeoServer will be enabled for all.
