Hi,

Just to gauge opinion, would it be possible / of use to allow alternative
styles to be provided on layer groups in a future release of GeoServer?

At present a layer group has a list of layers and I can specify the style I
want applied to each layer. I would think it would in theory be possible to
define multiple style sets (i.e. a style for each layer with a name for the
grouping).

To give an example; our base maps are a layer group with a number of raster
layers and then vector at the most detailed level. The vector level draws in
full colour but some users want to be able to see it in black and white
(effectively you just delete the <fill> from the SLD). The raster layers are
the same so I want to share the cache for those if possible. It would be useful
if that particular level could display two styles (and cache them of course).

I believe it is already possible if you publish them as separate layers but
then you have to put something in your OpenLayers display to change the base
map at given scales.

It would be good to hear other thoughts on that.
Cheers,
Paul
