Hi David,
the image mosaic plugin has a index which is really just a table with all
the location, time and elevation
informations of each tile. By default it would be stored in a shapefile,
which is suitable for smallish number
of tiles and/or time/elevation values, but one can also have it store the
index in a database, in such case
a db table would be used instead, which can be indexed and thus speedup
significantly the lookup for a
specific time or elevation.
