GeoServer 2.9 will be the first one built with Java 8.
I try to be clear in the docs on what version of Java is used to build and
test each release.
If you would like to have more confidence than that - we depend on members
of the community (such as yourself) to do a checkout of GeoServer 2.8 and
build using Java 8.
