Hi Paul,

you can verify the renderer GeoServer is using by checking the "Java 
Rendering Engine" on the "Server Status" screen (the first link in web 
admin GUI). If you use Marlin, you'll have 
"org.marlin.pisces.PiscesRenderingEngine" in there.
