Yes, but this is for the "Active Clustering Extension", right? 
From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) it is not needed for a
"simple" active/passive (read-only) with a shared (NFS) data_dir

I've set GEOSERVER_LOG_LOCATION to different files on both nodes, is it
enough?
