Hello again,
I made some testing and I noticed that when I changed the catalog mode to mixed
then Enable data security from Caching Defaults start working. My previous
setting was Challenge.

No other restrictions. It looks like "Enable data security" has no effect at
all. Geoserver version is 2.8. Any idea what to test next?
Just to make sure in case the layer group guess is not the actual cause, you
are making requests from a browser that is not
logged into GeoServer as admin in another window right?
