Yep, agree with Jukka on all the line. A note about that mail referred
above, it's talking about some improvements on GeoPackage reading speed that
I've worked on during the last Christmas break, and that will be available
in GeoServer 2.13.x (the first beta will be released in a couple of weeks).
If you want to try them out right now, it's also possible, see the nightly
builds here (no installers available, you'll have to be comfortable
deploying
in Tomcat or running from the command line):
