It is just you, the "null" key is filled and that method is used
successfully in tens of places.
Do you have an actual case in which it does not work? What makes you say it
shouldn't?

FeatureCollections normally do not actually hold features, they are a way
to access them,
features get materialized during iteration. The normal approach is to wrap
the collection,
