Hi Ashley, using a newer version of GDAL has been in the talks for a while now, it is not a "major" undertaking (for some definition of the term, it's not going to be months of work for sure) but will require us to update the code some and run some load testing with various formats to check the integration is stable. If Raytheon is interested in sponsoring this upgrade we'd certainly be grateful, you can contact commercial support providers for a quotation (yes, I do work for one of them): http://geoserver.org/support/
