You can find documentation for GeoServer at https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/index.html or downloadable from the same location you downloaded the installer.
There is a getting started guide in those docs. https://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/gettingstarted/shapefile-quickstar t/index.html which specifically covers shapefiles.
