Hopefully it will be fixed in 2.15.5 and 2.16.3 versions. If the style is assigned to a layer, you might want to try out the GetLegendGraphic request. https://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/services/wms/get_legend_graphic/index.html See if that works for you.
