Hi Michael, the short answer is "no", the longer is, "yes with a code change". Layer groups styles have been introduced by a community sponsored change, which spurred some negative feedback already, though it seems that a style is required for the INSPIRE validator to pass the capabilities documents content (personally don't really know, don't get to work on INSPIRE related stuff):
