Yes, this actually sends a request to geoserver to render a webpage; the webpage is the result of the getMap, which is almost instantaeous in most environments; The webbpage generates new getMap requests using the embedded javascript/OpenLayers.

to warm your cache you'd be better off using a different (image) format; I don't have any experience with hbase/hadoop, so can't tell you what a good strategy is - in any case I suspect it's dependant on your use case making it difficult to give a generic strategy.
