It is definitely well documented. The issue you might run into is that users then have to log in before they can see the data. You will have to provide them login credentials. We have used this successfully before with KML's.
Alternately things get more complicated if you are integrating authentication systems but it is possible to request an authenticated WMS on the back end of your system. Mainly you will want to set data security from Security > Data. You can set it more specifically for a workspace and a different Role.
