Hi Nicola, the thing is that, at the moment, the mosaic is unable to auto-populate the catalog with COG granules as it already does for standard files. For classic mosaics, you just configure an ImageMosaic on top of a local folder with data and it does the trick. However this doesn't work for remote folders of COG granules so you have to do that manually.
There are 2 ways to do that: 1) start with a standard local mosaic and then update the index with remote COG urls. 2) start with an empty COG mosaic and update the index by harvesting/adding COG granules to that. The shapefile isn't well suited as an index for this kind of dynamic operations. This is why a real database should be used.
