Yes, I know that page. :-)
I tried to installa geoserver on a vps similar to the one where I have
problems (but it's not a clone). I added a reference to my data (the
ones from my old 2.8 geoserver instance) and the creation of layers
works as expected.
I suppose I did something similar on the production vps that is not
working properly.
