It was the zip file though. I renamed it on server and unzipped. From there I could fiddle with the source on data-source and then create a layer so – sort of fixed. However, I need a method that doesn’t involve me having direct access to the server (ie on the production server, we can only access via the geoserver web interface or the API). It looks like zip files are only for imagemosaic. No idea how you are supposed to upload images with world files. Converting to geoTiff seems to be only option.
