Hi Graham, that seems the behavior the Oracle store adopts when it finds a column whose type it does not understand. If that's the case, a code change would be needed in the OracleDialect <https://github.com/geotools/geotools/blob/main/modules/plugin/jdbc/jdbc-oracle/src/main/java/org/geotools/data/oracle/OracleDialect.java> class, to make it correctly recognize the type, plus maybe some other changes to account of the timezone information. That, along with tests, would be the base for a Pull Request against a GeoTools <https://github.com/geotools/geotools/blob/main/.github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md> that would address the issue.
If coding is not an option for your organization, then you could look for someone to perform the changes on your behalf.
