Yes, Maven 2.0 is out in final release and has many advantages over
Maven 1.0. However it currently has one weakness which is preventing the
execution of some Geotools tests, but the Maven guys are working on this
issue:

As soon as this limitation is resolved (apparently in Maven 2.0.1), I
would like to propose the switch to Maven 2. In the main time, Maven 2
is provided as an experimental build system with tests disabled for some
modules (to ones where MNG-441 is a problem).
