A workaround is possible but it would take some work to implement. Recent versions of ESRI(tm) software support a meta-data file (.shp.xml yes, a double extention). In additoin to crs information this file can contain a mapping between the 10 character collumn names and a more more extensive and descriptive name of unlimited(?) length.
