Is this a guide to how to work on geotools itself?
Aka part of developers guide ...
Or is it a guide to how to make use of geotools?
Aka a Users Guide or programmers Guide..

It's a guide taken from the developers guide.
It explains how to set up to start developing GeoTools in a step by step way: JDK, JAI, JAI Image IO Tools, TortoiseSVN, Maven, Eclipse, Mevenide, Jalopy, PMD, Eclipse Profiler, Eclipse UML, XML buddy
Okay let me give some feedback:

1. J2SE JRE 1.5.xxxx

Why install a Java 5 JRE? It is not needed for geotools development .. are you doing that for Eclipse?

2-4. JDK + JAI + ImageIO

When you put this stuff into the wiki please follow the conventions you see here:

That is the instrucitons {include:JRE} and the JRE page is a link to the "current" URL, this allows us to
update the url in one place and have the correct information everywhere.

6. Maven 1.x

We may be able to remove this after monday's meeting.

7. maven 2.0.2 - IT'S PREFERRABLE TO USE MAVEN 1.x SINCE MAVEN 2.x GIVES STRANGE ERRORS

Can you give us feedback about the errors? We are very close to scrapping maven 1.x due to lack of volunteers. We have been unable to make
good javadoc from maven 1.x since about September.

8. Eclipse SDK (3.1.2)

We would need to keep a guide for eclipse seperate (geotools is IDE agnostic) And thanks for the MavenIDE instrunctions I have not bothered to try out maven IDE yet, is it any good?

Indeed I love you whole eclipse section - !

You may consider Subclipse as a plugin, I like it better then tortise, however there are reports of it slowing down build times.
