Sounds like you got it, note that the for a "valid" feature the "Type" recipe has been followed. So you may be able to write a faster renderer if you make the assumption that the data is valid.

And your understand of CRS being provided by "overriding" is correct. I must admit that GML allows for individual Coordinates to have a CRS - this is the point at which I drew the line :-)
