Hey all,

Thanks for the vote of confidence. However, I don't think any change in
my status makes sense for the time being.

I'm not really sure what this nomination is for so I can't see how it's
going to make my work more efficient or my contributions more
effective.

I don't yet feel that I have a *basic* understanding of the library, so
I don't feel good yet about either pronouncing myself on architectural
decisions or on creating patches for review and commit. This search for
a basic understanding is what's driving my documentation effort---I want
to know what is really happening when a user opens a shapefile for
display. This is close to equivalent to wanting to know, when a simple
shapefile is being displayed, what are the computational structures
being used at that instant. I hope to evolve to understand this
eventually but don't think I am there yet. Note that I do feel I can
discuss naming. Jody recently suggested that new users don't read the
javadocs but rely on class and method names to guess at what the code
does. When I understand the code then I can have strong, and possibly
useful, opinions on naming. :-)

Martin, thanks for the suggestion of getting direct svn access. The main
reason for me *not* to do this, is to keep working from an SDK rather
than from an SVN checkout of the code. I'm trying to experience things
from the 'user' perspective. Eventually, perhaps I should figure out a
way to generate patches in Eclipse from modifying the SDK but figuring
that out will take work and is not a priority.

Sorry to all for my delay in answering---I've been helping a friend move
and drive across the country.
