I'd prefer to use findbugs, since it actually helped me to remove a few bugs in an old application whilst PMD on the same app just reported things that where not real bugs, but just style problems. Unfortunately the m2 findbugs plugin is not well mantained and I'm having a hard time getting in touch with the developer (2-5 days mail turnaround time...). I'll keep you posted on the findbugs plugin progress. One definite problem with findbugs is that it's very resource intensive, so it's better to put it in a build profile that can be enabled only on request.
