It is called the "SDK" Release, includes source code etc..  Also the svn 
repository is public.  I will have to hook you up with Jesse for a

You got it, indeed the uDig renderer switches between several of the 
GeoTools SLD renderers depending on need. The most advantageous one is 
ShapfileRenderer that has been optimized to death ...
