Andrea,

Yes, OGR does have Java bindings (generated via SWIG) though I am not clear
on how well used they are yet.  I would note that work is already going
on for raster coverage support in Geotools built on GDAL so having a vector
support on OGR doesn't exactly add a *new* problem.
