Good question, I think the focus is to allow you to sell your work that 
makes use of the geotools library. You will need to include the geotools 
library, and if you need to hack any of the jars you will need to make 
those hacks available to us (ie a patch, a tarball or something). But we 
would invite you just to work with us on any bugs you find.

The point is that your code remains your code, and you can give it away 
or sell it or whatever. Our code does remain our code, and it is made 
available to you with the LGPL license. When you sell your program to 
people, geotools code comes along for the ride, and if your users want 
to look at geotools code they can come and talk to us ...

Usual I am not a layer comment.

In practice GeoTools is used in several commercial projects, and the 
real reason to give us back any changes is to cut down on your own 
maintenance costs.
