Thanks for getting back to me Jean:

I have had to drop JScience from my application (which made me sad as it 
was exactly what was looking for to minimize risk). I have looked into 
retro weaver before but it did not look like
a sensible solution for the GeoAPI / GeoTools relationship - but perhaps 
another experiment is required. Currently we use an ant script to strip 
out generics and remove any type narrowing in the
code base before compiling a Java 1.4 jar for release.

Thanks for tracking this issue, and the best of luck with JSR-275.
