Actually I'm not sure that this is the cause - unknown tag should not crash 
javadoc. It may be worth to try to comment-out the <taglet> section in the 
parent pom.xml file (a second hypothesis that I just though about - the taglet 
API may not be the same between Java 1.4 and 1.5).
