Well there are a couple ideas:
- back port uDig rendering system (making sure EMF is not used for events)
- enabled Martin and friends to work on Renderer's based on some ISO 
standard
- slurp up any thing we learn as a "revision" to GO-1
- the uDig rendering system is actually very similar to one of the ISO specs
- try out a couple back ends to the rendering system: AWT, SWT and OpenGL

In short rendering work is something of a research topic, and rather 
then start from nothing back porting the uDig
rendering system will get everyone working more quickly. Gotta so that 
there is no advantage for uDig short term
and I have to show that GeoTools can improve on quality for any 
involvement to be credible.

PS.  To have this conversation in useful terms we need to hunt down 
whoever charges for ISO specs
and explain that they are not a publishing house.
