If somebody already did the math and published his formulas for each
projection,
we could use that. But if we need to do the math by ouself, I suspect that this
is a tedious task affordable only to skilled mathematicians. I don't think that
we have the resources for that. See for example the equations for the Mercator
projection, which is not the most complex one:

In addition, such formulas would not be an accurate indicator of "valid area"
anyway. The valid area is not determined only by the accuracy of the underlying
mathematic. It is also determined by the datum in use, which is a completly
empirical beast and often tied to a particular country, no matter what the
projection mathematic is.
