Perhaps I can be more blunt Ian,

The color brewer code is not what is of interest here; what is of
interest is functions that GeoVista uses being broken, the functions
depended on side-effects and the ability of a feature to find it's
parent. This is no longer supported (does not agree with any feature
model) and GeoVista will need to update following these directions:

http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTOOLS/Upgrade+to+2.4

Basically split your earlier code into:
1. Perform a Classification function on your feature collection
2. Construct an Slot expression that takes a Classification as a literal
argument

This approach is even harder to use for styling, you will need to
preprocess your Style object and provide the correct classification
literals.

Repeat the classification functions you have depended on should of been
fixed before now; please show the above page to the GeoVista crew and
see if they can think of a less damaging approach.

Please note that the only reason this code is working right now in
GeoTools 2.3 is due to a few accidents where feature collections are
gobbled into memory.

Cheers,
Jody
