Paul just reminded me of a very interesting thing for you to check out 
w/ respect to version API & approach.
The FDO project has some mention of version in it - it would be 
interesting to know what approach they
have taken (and if it matches one of the other two).

Other then that I am overwhelmed by your link - and will need to look at 
it another day.
