However, the root cause of the problem seems to be that having followed 
all the setup instructions, Eclipse was pointing to the JDK 1.5 JRE, 
which doesnt have JAI installed - and when I told it to use the 
JSDK1.4/JRE it seems to to have found it.  I think the instructions need 
to be tweaked here. Probably by someone with more understandig of the 
voodoo than me!
