Well, turned out the "secret sauce" to make things work in trunk has been committed by Jody at revision 22600 in a monstrously big commit that turns tons of users of old filters into a user of new geoapi filters in the main and rendering module at least. I'll have to filter out the necessary parts and backport them to 2.3.0. It seems that I'm not far, but I'll have to check tomorrow with a fresh pair of eyes, the diff limited to main/src/main/java weights more than 120kb...
