Keep in mind that making a profile the default can lead to problems in other modules. For instance, in arcsde Saul has set up a profile which loads the dummy sde jar which is activated by default. Activating another profile by default will cancel this one out. Which means arcsde module wont build. This hits on why i think we are overusing profiles imho.
