Thanks for the support Jo - I think this is a case where both groups do 
not feel like experts in this field. I know Chris Holmes went and talked 
to the EFF in order to sort out the options for GeoServer.

Is there anyone we can ask for help? I have the impression that the 
option proposed by the OSGeo board was "okay", but that the sales pitch 
was missing. The thing to sign was all about what the code contributor 
was giving up; with none of the responsibilities of OSGeo documented. 
The code contributors could decide to trust the OSGeo foundation; but it 
would be a better sales pitch if the charter and so on were locked down.

Apparently this kind of thing is quite normal, but there was no way of 
telling that at the time.
