Page 16 introduces the concept of "Basic Stream metadata" in addition of "Stream metadata". This new metadata level is not mentionned in the introduction.
Do we expect "Basic stream metadata" to be returned by the "flat" or the "smart" image reader? If they are expected to be returned by the "flat" one, how do we distinguish "basic stream metadata" from "stream metadata"? Can we make this distinction without new API, using the "formatName" argument in IIOMetadata.getAsTree(String)? By the way, my understanding is "flat reader" = javax.imageio.ImageReader and "smart reader" = some higher-level wrapper that we would create in Geotools, not javax.imageio.ImageReader subclass. Is it right? > The “smart” reader performs a sort of “re-mapping” of the low level images, > grouping them into > coverages. It has the geo-spatial capabilities and the high level information > necessary to > understand how the coverage structure is composed. Also, the “smart” reader > should create > internally clever and efficient indexes in order to serve the requests as > fast as possible. Just as a side note: this discussion on "smart reader" (page 27) is close to what a coverage catalog ("PostGrid" could be one) tries to do.
