More observations
Just starting to look at some new methods:
bandMerge

The method name doesn't said really what the method does, and the javadoc
doesn't help neither. I suggest to rename this method "repeatFirstBand" (which
is what it does), and change the implementation a little bit (current one
creates many intermediate images).
Also this method probably need a use case (why do you want to do that). For
example I can understand what it means for an image having only one band (could
be see as a way to convert indexed grayscale to RGB grayscale when the target
number of bands is 3) but I wonder what it means for an image having initially
more 2 or 3 bands. It may help us to find a better name.
