The fact that is blurry is in fact normal. Yet, due to the expansion intrinsic in the mercator projection far away from the equator, it happens that one source pixel expands up to become 2-3 destination pixels, increasing the blur. If the source image was higher resolution, a one of the small pixels of the source image could become one of the normal size destination pixels, if you get the idea. Of course there won't be a 1-1 relation, but I'm persuaded that by having more source pixels the image would be better defined, both from a visual point of view, and from a scientific point of view (think the case of a DEM reprojection).
