Ciao Adrian, please read below... Christian has developed this tool in house and he wants to share it with us. He has already done work towards integration into geoserver hence I think we should take a look at it.

I won't go down again the road of who is doing what first since to me it starts to seem a waste of time. > Perhaps you want another approach > to the same issue or perhaps that duplication makes the project less > interesting to you---I merely want to give everyone a head's up on the > work. I have checked the code in postgrid, you might not be aware that we are trying to work on phase two of the work we did last here to support grib to extend to netcdf and hdf since we are working on fusion of satellite and metoc time series. We are trying to cooperate with Martin on this, specifically at the Imageio level; alessio is trying to revamp a bit the netcdf reader that is in geotools whilst, together with daniele they are trying to refine a proposal for low level metadata based on a merge of what we did last yeat plus what martin put together. This is just to say that we have checked what you guys are doing and we are trying to align as much as possible, even though probably having some more info would help a lot :-). As of this student project, I have not looked at the code myself yet, but from the things he said to me I see two intereswting things: 1>it should be portable between different db 2>it is almost independent from JAI Bottom line is, I think it is worth to give it a try.
