I agree on this one, renderer should not know the details of what it's rendering, if there is a compile time dependency on any data source, it should be removed. I don't agree we should remove the GDAL based modules thought, if you don't want to use them, just don't add dependencies to them in your projects. If there is anything preventing you from doing so, it's a bug and it has to be treated as such. Also note the unfinished ogr-datastore module builds on the OGC native libraries as well, which are shipped along with GDAL. I don't remember anyone complaining about it, thought it's been there for at least one year.
