Renaming it as "copy(ReferencedEnvelope)" would make its intend clear and avoid

Ah, I missed the fact that the Envelope was the JTS one (I confused with the
GeoAPI one). Then you are right, we can hardly get the correct CRS.
Just renaming the first "reference" as "copy" would seems quite nice to me then
:)
