I think we are all aware of how amazing Adrian has been during this time of need. I personally had a couple hard runs at this problem and can really respect the time and effort Adrian has invested in this work.
One bit of advice I have for the frigging osgeo incubation process is that it is *not* cool to ask us to avoid tools and do the manual inspection; for these larger code bases. I understand that GRASS went through this years ago (before OSGeo) and it would be interesting to compare notes.
