I am pretty sure we did establish that we don't need JAI; but I am coming to the conclusion that to use it is fatal...it it looks like GeoTools is only working with the pure jai / imageio jars are used as a maven dependency? I am starting a plain (no JAI at all) JDK5 and SDK6 to test this out ...
