Hi Johann - I am trying to set up the GeoTools project so this scenario does not continue to play itself out. If you review the technical debt page (http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOTOOLS/Technical+Debt) you will see that the majority of these issues were created in just this fashion. We need to be careful that GeoTools a dumping ground for patches expecting to be applied for free. You can see our list of Jira issues that contain patches - that will never be applied due to lack of funding as an example of this.
When you miss a deadline and have no money left to work on the problem it is a case of poor planning and communication. I expect you to work on this; and I expect the GeoTools community to also work on this. You will be getting a lot of feeback on the changes you have made based on a couple of real world applications - who is going to be accounting for this effort? Personally I will be working on this to help clean up the style interfaces / factory / visitor contact prior to a new batch of uDig programmers being exposed to this area of GeoTools. Your organization probably has similar motivations. In terms of planning you should ask for some time to apply this patch and address the problems that occur. The fact that this is happening now (rather than three weeks ago) does not change the amount of work you would need to do.
