Hello all The december 2008 OGC Technical Committee Meeting was held in Valencia (Spain). We had a formal GeoAPI meeting Tuesday December 2 from 18h00 to 19h00. 12 peoples were attending. The slides can be viewed there:
http://portal.opengeospatial.org/files/?artifact_id=31509 The meeting goal was to start a new official OGC Standard Working Group for GeoAPI. We got enough interrested parties for starting the work (the minimum according OGC rules is 3 different organisations). Peoples from the following organisations have already expressed their interest (in alphabetical order): - Centre National d'études spatiales (CNES, France) - ERDAS - Geomatys (France) - Institut Geographique National (IGN, France) - Laboratoire des Sciences de l’Information et des Systèmes (LSIS, France) Peoples from CSRIO and gvSig wish to consult their hierarchy. The GeoAPI Standard Working Group (SWG) will initially focus their work on the following packages: - org.opengis.util - org.opengis.metadata - org.opengis.parameter - org.opengis.referencing Only the above packages would be OGC standard for the initial release, because they are more stable and tested than other packages. All other packages will probably move to a "pending" module. The official and the pending modules will each have their own, separated, javadoc and JAR file in order to make clear what is OGC standard and what is work in progress. Right after the above packages are standardized, the GeoAPI SWG will shift its work to geometry, coverage and other modules (in an order to be determined). Participation to the SWG is open to any OGC member. If you wish to participate but are not an OGC member (and do not work for a compagny that could afford to be an OGC member), OSGEO can provide membership for a limited number of individuals. To participate, login to the OGC portal using your account and register yourself to the GeoAPI SWG (to be created on the OGC portal in about two weeks). If you are not an OGC member, don't worry. We got an agreement for keeping the discussion on the public GeoAPI mailing list hosted on SourceForge. The SVN is likely to stay on SourceForge too (an alternative could be to move to OSGEO). Your comments will still welcome as they are today. The initial work of the Standard Working Group would be: - Document the general rules and policies. - Check the interfaces defined in the initial list of packages (see above) and make sure they matches latest standards. - Make sure that any departure from ISO standard are documented and have good justification. - Make sure that any extension (GeoTools-specific interfaces or method) are documented and have good justification. Of course existing interfaces may be debated. I will post a new email when registration will be open on the OGC portal.
